Nicholas silver rouble 1897 (AG)
The reform carried out was prepared by Alexander II and Alexander III. Its introduction was carried out by the last Russian emperor Nicholas II.
It was held by the Minister of Finance S. Yu. Witte, which ultimately led to a significant improvement in the state of the Russian economy in those years.
The most noticeable difference that this coin has. If before the monarchs looked to the right (as if to the east), then the last Russian emperor Nicholas II looks to the left (west).
Therefore, the Nicholas silver rouble of 1897 is added to its antique value by the fact that this is the first reform coin, with a change in the artistic image of the monarch's person.
These silver roubles were minted in the era of Emperor Nicholas II for almost 20 years. And although they were released in more than 18 million copies, almost all were in circulation. Therefore, these roubles are almost never found in perfect condition. At our auction you have a unique opportunity to purchase a silver rouble of Nicholas II in excellent condition. Description of the Nicholas silver rouble.
If you look closely at the portrait of Emperor Nicholas II on the obverse (for coins with the image of the monarch, the obverse is considered the side with the portrait) you will see that the features of the last tsarist person of Russia differ from his images on other roubles of the two previous years of minting. This is because a new type of portrait is minted in roubles with the date "1897".
The obverse in its central part has a relief portrait of Emperor Nicholas II in profile. Nicholas II looks to the left, unlike the coins of other monarchs. The portrait is framed by a relief inscription:
Left “Б.М. НИКОЛАЙ II ИМЕРАТОРЪ",
Right "И САМОДЕРЖЕЦЪ ВСЕРОСС."
The portrait was made by the famous artist-carver Anton Vasyutinsky.
Anton Fedorovich Vasyutinsky (January 17, 1858 - December 2, 1935) - artist, sculptor-medalist, carver, academician of the Imperial Academy of Arts. Author of many stamps of award and commemorative medals and coins of the Russia Empire and the Soviet Union. Wikipedia.
The reverse, like earlier coins, adorns the small coat of arms of the Russia Empire.
This is a two-headed eagle, on each head there is a crown, and above the crowns there is one more - large in size.
The Eagle holds the Scepter and Orb in its paws.
The eagle's chest is decorated with a shield with the image of Gregory the Victorious.
On the wings are small shields with the coats of arms of the provinces subordinate to the Russia Empire.
Below the coat of arms, the denomination of the "РУБЛЬ" coin and the year of issue "1897" are minted in large capital letters. Between these inscriptions there is a curly star.
The edge of the Nicholas rouble along the circumference has an indented inscription: "ЧИСТАГО СЕРЕБРА 4 ЗОЛОТNИКА 21 ДОЛЯ". In addition, there is a mintzmeister sign in brackets: (А • Г), which means Apollo Grashof (1883-1899), St. Petersburg Mint.
Note: in view of the fact that it was required to mint more roubles than was physically able to mint by Petersburg Mint, then part of the mintage of silver roubles in 1897 was transferred to Belgium. On such coins, instead of the mintzmeister sign, they have two stars. Another part of the mintage was forwarded to Paris. In this case, there is one star on the coins. But this minimal difference has no particular numismatic value.
Rare varieties of the Nicholas rouble of 1897 also fall into our auction. These coins have all kinds of coin errors. These include:
