Description of the silver rouble of Nicholas II
Silver rouble coins were issued from 1895 to 1915 during the reign of Nicholas II. There were a lot of these coins, they were practically all in circulation. Accordingly, many of them have lost their collectible value, and not many remain in good and perfect condition.
That is why the auction price for the silver Nicholas rouble, especially minted in 1901 (they were minted in a relatively small amount) in perfect condition may exceed the cost of the gold chervonets.
The roubles that have been in long-term circulation do not represent any auction value, and only exceed the price of the silver from which they are made. That is, the cost of such a coin is 18 grams of silver of 900 purity at the price of silver at the exchange rate at the time of sale, plus a small increase to the price for being an old coin.
In the center of the obverse there is a profile relief of Monarch Nicholas II. As on all rouble coins of this series, the Emperor looks to the west. This is a distinctive feature, because all previous relers were minted with the rulers face turned to the east.
There are 2 inscriptions around the portrait.
Left: “Б.М. НИКОЛАЙ II ИМЕРАТОРЪ",
Right "И САМОДЕРЖЕЦЪ ВСЕРОСС."
The portrait was made by the artist-carver Anton Vasyutinsky (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anton_Vasyutinsky), which was highly valued at the Court.
The reverse has a small coat of arms of the Russian Empire - a two-headed eagle. Above each eagle's head is a crown. And above them is another large crown. The eagle holds the Scepter and Orb in its paws.
The eagle's chest is decorated with a shield depicting Gregorio the Victorious
The eagle's wings are adorned with small shields with provincial coats of arms, which were subordinate to the Russian Empire.
Below the coat of arms in large capital letters are minted the denomination of the coin "РУБЛЬ" and the year of issue "1901",
Between these words, a curly five-pointed star that looks like a flower.
The edge of the rouble around the circumference is provided with an indented inscription: "ЧИСТАГО СЕРЕБРА 4 ЗОЛОТNИКА 21 ДОЛЯ",
and the sign of the mintzmeister in brackets: (Ф·З) - Felix Zalemn, (А·Р) - Alexander Redko, St. Petersburg Mint.
Rubles of 1901 with the initials (А·Р) on the edge are about four times less common than (Ф·З).
There are rare errors in the 1901 silver rouble.
These are coin errors, such as the misalignment of the obverse relative to the reverse, the absence of the edge inscription, the absence of individual image elements.
Such coins can be priced significantly higher than standard ones.
